Curriculum Update October 1-5

It was wonderful seeing everyone at parent teacher conferences. I enjoyed speaking to each of you about all the progress your child has made this school year.

On Friday, the third grade will have a solar cookout. We are looking for 3 volunteers to help assemble the pizza boxes for each child's solar cooker on Thursday at 2:00 pm. There will be a note coming home in Monday folders for items we are requesting donations for the cookout. Please send in 50 cents with your child by Wednesday for us to purchase the pizza boxes from Pizza Shoppe.

Reading
Last week, we talked about inferring. This week, we will actually begin Theme 3, What is Light? The comprehension skill focus will be inferring. With inferring, students needs to be able to focus on what the text said and their prior knowledge to determine the author's meaning. For example, if the text said someone studied snowflakes each day, they could infer they like snowflakes or the person was fascinated with snowflakes.
The vocabulary words will be monitor, pattern, projected, beam and absorption.

Math
The students did very well on their Topic 2 math test. On Wednesday, we learned about data. The students measured each other's smiles and we figured out the mode, median, minimum, maximum, and range.

This week, we will begin topic 3. We will work on using place value to add and subtract, adding with an expanded algorithm, models for adding 3-digit numbers, adding 3 or more numbers, and drawing a picture to help with problem solving.
SS
Last week, we kicked off our "Pay it Forward" project with our community walk. The students wrote nice messages and attached them to a red bandanna. The red bandanna stood for 9-11 victim, Welles Crowther.  http://crowthertrust.org/main.htm
Look for more to come with this project.

Class posing with red bandannas before our community walk

This week, we will focus on the different roles of a community. The students will be broken up into groups to create their own classroom community.

Science
We will continue with our solar energy unit. The students will perform an investigation to discover if different colored water absorbs solar energy at different rates. We will also learn about different solar cookers and how they are used as a of survival for many people throughout the world. At the end of the week, we will make our own solar cookers and cook baked apples and nachos.

Spelling
The spelling pattern will focus on long vowels in Rigby
List 1: alone, scrape, quote, behave, polite, entire, type, spoke, brake, space
List 2: telephone, volume, spaceship, graceful, bracelet, homework, rely, arrive, surprise, replay
Extension List (uni~one) unicellular, unicorn, unicycle, unidirectional, unify, unilateral, unique, unison, unit, unitard

Writing
We will work on word clouds to help enhance our word choice.  We will also write pen pal letters to our Derrick Thomas Academy pen pals.

Have a fantastic week!

Zooburst- Family Vacation Narrative Stories

The students worked on narrative writing. They created a fictional or non-fiction story on a family vacation. We worked on strong beginnings, conclusions and developing the plot. After they went through the writing process, they typed their stories on Zooburst and created their own pop-up books.

Math Facts

It is important the students are practicing their math facts. The expectation for third grade is:
At least 80 correct out of 100 addition facts: 4 minutes (1st quarter/2nd quarter)
At least 80 correct out of 100 subtraction facts: 5 minutes (1st quarter/2nd quarter)
At least 80 correct out of 100 multiplication facts: 5 minutes (3rd quarter)
At least 80 correct out of 100 division facts: 5 minutes (4th quarter)

Here are some great sites for practicing timed math tests and fact games.

Voice Thread Communities

We have working on suburban, urban and rural communities. The students worked in pairs to create their own town. They then wrote a paragraph about the town they created. Their final part was creating a Voice Thread of their community. The actual communities can be seen outside of the classroom during parent teacher conferences.

Coach Snyder Thank You

Some of the students are posing with photos and a signed K-State helmet they received from Coach Snyder on Friday.  Below is a message in a card he sent to the class.

Thank you to all the wonderful students in Mrs. Leggett's class. We greatly enjoyed having you with us and thank you for the gracious letters sent by each of you.

Thank you for your kind note. I truly appreciate your interest in Kansas State Football. Your loyal support means a great deal to all of us.

Solar Heaters & Sun Screen with Solar Beads

Last week, the students tested the effectiveness of sun screen on solar beads. We used five different sun screens to see which one was the best. The students were able to determine this if the solar beads didn't change color.

They also created solar water heaters. They tested white solar heaters covered and not covered and black solar water heaters covered and not covered. They determined the non-covered black solar heater initially absorbed the most heat, but over time, the one that was covered and black absorbed the most heat.

Zach, Team Leggett MVP September 24-28

Zach is a great friend to everyone. He is really funny and creative. Zach loves reading Diary of Wimpy Kid books. He is nice to everyone. Congrats Zach!

Curriculum Update September 24-26

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. For those who are Chiefs fans and K-State fans, I know you had a fantastic weekend.

Please remember, there is no school on Thursday and Friday. You should have received parent teacher confirmation e-mails. If you have not, please let me know and I will let you know when your conference is. On Tuesday, we are taking our walking community field trip. Please make sure your child has money for McDonald's.

Our first school-wide reading program kicks off this week. The students will continue to use the reading lods they have been turning in each week. If they read at least 100 minutes for the week, they will have their reading log put in a weekly drawing for prizes. For every 1000 minutes the class reads, we are able to put a book in the fish bowl. Thanks for ensuring your child is reading each week.

Our class goes to the book fair on Monday. They are able to go all week and it will also be available on announcements.

Throughout the unit, the students have began learning about the importance of citizenship. Each month, the students will perform an act of kindness to understand how they can make a difference as third grade students.

Science
We will continue with our solar energy unit. The students will perform an investigation to discover if different colored water absorbs solar energy at different rates.

Spelling
There is no spelling this week due to the short week. In class, we will still be working on long vowels.

Writing
We will complete our vacation stories this week. Many students are on the publishing phase, now just typing them on the computer.

Have a fantastic week!

Country Mouse, City Mouse Commercials

After reading Country Mouse, City Mouse in our Rigby books, the students made commercials. They had to summarize the story and incorporate asking questions and making connections, both skills we have been working on in reading. They all did a great job!

Compatible Numbers

I know there have been a lot of questions about compatible numbers. I hope this will help you out. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Definition of Compatible Number
·         Compatible numbers are numbers that are close in value to the actual numbers and easy to add, subtract, multiply, or divide mentally.
·         They are useful in estimating the sum, difference, product, or quotient.
Example 422 + 38
Compatible numbers usually end in 0 or 5.
420 + 40 = 460  or
425 + 40 = 465 or
425 + 35 = 460
These would all be acceptable answers.

118-42
Compatible number examples:
120 – 40 =
The purpose is to make it easier when adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.

Curriculum Update September 17-21

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and upcoming week. Please remember picture day is on Wednesday.

The lap-a-thon was a huge success. Thank you for returning the pledge envelopes.

Reading
We will continue Theme 2, Life in Many Places in Rigby. The comprehension strategy focus is asking questions. Your child should ask questions before, during and after reading which will continue to make them "think" about what they are reading. We have also been continuing to ask questions.
The vocab words are: distinguish, popular, coast, voyage and creek.

Math
We began Topic 2, number sense: addition and subtraction. The students have learned different strategies for mental math. This week, we will work on rounding, estimating sums, estimating differences, making sense of addition and subtraction equations, and reasonableness.

SS
The students began to learn about their Shawnee community. We talked about roles of different people in the community, focusing on the mayor of Shawnee. The students completed their "Where in the World is?" posters and their circle map, which focused on how their city relates to the rest of the world.

This week, we will continue to learn about rural, suburban, and urban communities. The students will create their own communities.

Science
We are continuing with our solar energy unit. This week, we learned about how earth materials absorb solar energy at different rates. In conducting our investigation, we discovered gravel heats the quickest, with sand coming in very closely. Tree bark absorbed the least solar energy.

Earth material photos:

This week, we will test the effectiveness of sun screen and create solar water heaters.
Spelling
The Rigby spelling theme will focus on word families.
List 1: tulip, slip, relay, today, began, plan, clown, frown, black, fold
List 2: battleship, fingertip, midday, highway, yesterday, mailman, quarterback, attack, withhold, blindfold
Extension List: The prefix is poly (many) polychromatic, polyclinic, polydactyl, polyglot, polygon, polygraph, polyhedron, polymorphous, polysyllabic, polytheism

Writing
We completed our beginnings for our narrative we are writing on a family vacation. The students were able to choose between a fiction or nonfiction story. We now will begin to develop our plot. They are working hard on making their story interesting by using "colorful" and no "worn out" words (nice, big, little, etc.)

The students were so excited to receive letters from their pen pals in Kentucky. This is a rural school, so it was interesting learning how so many students lived on farms and owned horses and cows. We will finish writing them back this week.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Kerpoof Project

The students created pictures on Kerpoof. They chose their own backgrounds and designed a scene that stood out to them. Afterwards, they had to write three things they learned in Topic 1 in math and had to make two connections, a skill we previously worked on in reading. They were very creative and did a great job with their pictures!
