Living Organisms Movies

We have been learning about the ways organism's interact within their habitats. The students worked in collaborative groups to study a living organism in the classroom and perform an experiment (nothing harmful). The students had to use each step of the scientific process and take photos. To culminate the lesson, they created a movie using Windows Movie Maker. Here are their movies.

Restaurant Menus

The students worked on a math project where they created their own restaurant name and a menu for the restaurant. They were required to use adjectives and other descriptive words when describing menu choices. Students also had to incorporate clip art. Other requirements included creating five appetizers, five entrees, five desserts and three beverages. After creating the menu, students exhanged menus and created meals. They had to find the total for their meal, 5% sales tax, and figure out 15% gratuity. They then had to determine the total price. Afterwards, students created a newspaper review for their restaurant using the Web 2.0 tool, Fodey. Students did an outstanding job of displaying their creativity.

Curriculum Update May 6-10

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Thank you to everyone who sent in items for science week or volunteered their time. It was a successful week! On Friday, we will have our third grade science fair from 2:15-3:30 pm in the cafeteria. You are welcome to come look around at all the wonderful experiments. The third graders will be explaining their experiments to the student body.

Please remember to send in a sack lunch with your child on Tuesday. We will be having a community trash pick up in the morning. In the afternoon, we will walk to Monticello Trails Park to eat lunch and have our Earth Day Scavenger hunt.

Reading: We will begin our study of living organisms. The students will read about their habitats and food cycles. The students will perform research on one of the living organisms in our classroom.

Spelling: We are finished with spelling for the school year.

Writing: The students will research one of the class living organisms and write from their point of view, explaining facts about them. They will present it on Blabberize.

Math: We will continue our study of area this week. The students will figure out area using the distributive property, use problem solving to solve simpler problems, measure the area of irregular shapes, find same area with different perimeters and measure equal area for fractions.

Science: We will put our science fair boards together.

Have a wonderful week!

Global Recycling Project

The students have completed their global recycling project. After being assigned a country, they formulated their own questions to conduct research. Some groups were able to Skype or speak to recycling experts in their country via e-mail. They used a variety of technology tools to present their research and created their own websites. The students did a wonderful job!
