Team Leggett MVP Schedule

Team Leggett MVP is a week where there is a spotlight on a student in our classroom for an entire week. I will send home a spotlight feature for the student to complete.

Monday (Spotlight on Team Leggett MVP): Students should bring in special items to share with their classmates on Monday. Students should also bring 10-12 photos of their choice to display on the Team Leggett MVP board.

Tuesday (MVP Book): The Team Leggett MVP brings his or her favorite picture book to read to the class (or have Mrs. Leggett read to the class).

Wednesday (MVP Parent Letter or Video): Parents will write a letter to the class telling us how special your child is to you. Send the letter in with your child in a sealed envelope and I will read it to the class. The content of the letter is up to you, but you may choose from some of the following ideas: Describe special or funny stories about your child for the class to hear, write a silly or serious poem about your child, send silly or special pictures with a letter describing the pictures, or write a short story with your child as the main character. You may also send in a video for the class to watch if you choose.

Thursday (MVP Lunch): If possible, please join your child for lunch. Our lunch is from 12:30-1:00 pm each day. You may also choose to have a sibling, friend, or your child's favorite relative be a lunch buddy that day. It can be kept a surprise or you can let your child know in advance. If you are unable to make it all week, please let me know and I will make sure that your child has a special lunch.

Friday (Team Leggett MVP Friends Day): The Team Leggett MVP will be presented with a friendship poster created by the Team Leggett Publicist and signed by all of Team Leggett.

*I am very flexible. If you need any days rearranged, I will be happy to do so. Thank you for making this a special week for the Team Leggett MVP.

Effectiveness of Sunscreens

The kids learned how to test the effectiveness of different sunscreens using sunbeads. They realized they all do not work the same way. The most important thing learned was that the sunscreen spray is quick, but not the best to protect against the sun's ultraviolet rays.

Curriculum Update August 26-30

Wow! The first week of school flew by. I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend.

On Monday, please look for information about the third grade solar cookout to come home. It will be on Thursday, September 5. If you are able to send in any items, please let me know. Thank you in advance.

Don't forget, all homework will always be posted on your child's Schoology account. www.schoology.com

Reading: We will be reading about types weather, weather instruments, and narrative weather stories for the next four weeks. Some skills we will be working on are:
-Figuring out what an author really means by the words and phrases that are written
-Explaining how the author uses illustrations to help the meaning in a story
-Asking and answering questions to show understanding of the information being read
-Finding the main idea of the information being read
-Showing how the main idea is supported by details in the text
-Understanding the meaning of words and phrases in science texts

Writing: Throughout this unit, we will be working on informing and explaining ideas, sharing my opinion and writing to tell a story. This week, we will begin writing to share my opinion as students choose the natural disaster they feel most impacts society.

Grammar: We will be working on capitalization (beginning words, titles and proper nouns). We will also use correct ending punctuation and focus on nouns.

Math: The flipped classroom has been going well. We have been focusing on place value. The students have learned up to the hundred thousands place. We will continue working on naming numbers, understanding and counting on number lines, comparing numbers, ordering numbers, and using problem solving to make an organized list.

Spelling/Vocabulary: All of the spelling/vocabulary will tie directly into the content we are learning. The students have two weeks to study. For spelling, the students will write each word after the teacher says it in a sentence. For vocabulary, the students will choose at least 8 of the vocabulary words and write them in a story, demonstrating they know the meaning of the words. The test will be on Friday, September 6.

All About Me Videos

The students have completed their first videos of the year. Instead of the typical All About Me bags, the students were challenged to create a video showing who they were. They did a wonderful job! Here are the links to their videos.
