Sploder Video Games

The students recently completed their video games. They had to create a game with at least three different levels. Then, they wrote a blog summarizing their game, problem solving steps they used and why they designed the game the way they did. Afterwards, they played another student's game. They had to blog about what they would rate the game and cite evidence from their game to explain their thinking. Finally, they had to explain whether they would purchase the game. Next, their family members will play and rate their games. After this, they will write another blog explaining what they would do different when creating their next game.

Genius Hour Projects

Multiplication for Kids by Kids

What do you do when you want the students to take ownership of their learning? You have them create their own website. The students created their own multiplication website filled with songs, stories, games and explanations they created demonstrating meaning of multiplication. They really did a wonderful job!

Curriculum Update November 18-22

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I can't believe it is almost time for Thanksgiving already! We have been lucky to have some very nice weather in December.

 

Please note, we will reschedule our Skype with our grade 3 class pen pals in Pakistan. Unfortunately, some conflict took place over the weekend and their schools will need to be closed for a few days. I will let you know of the new date when it is rescheduled.

 

On Thursday, we will be presenting our movies to many city leaders in Shawnee. The students will also share what they feel the city is doing well in and what areas of improvement needed. You are welcome to attend. It will be at 2:00 pm.
 

ELA/Science: We will continue our force and interactions unit. The overall guiding question will be, How do you know forces are acting on an object?" We will be conducting investigations to better understand how unbalanced and balanced forces impact motion. We will continue identifying the main idea of a text by recounting the details and explaining how they support the main idea. The students will also create and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of what they are reading.

Spelling/Vocabulary: We are continuing to focus on force, incorporating how magnetism is a force. We will not have a spelling or vocabulary test over new terms. A new list will come out on December 2.

Math: We are now exploring the meaning of division. Students will understand how division is sharing, repeated subtraction, how to find missing numbers on the multiplication table, writing division stories and how to choose an appropriate equation with problem solving.

Writing: We will continue to work on opinion writing this week in math and in science.

Cards and Candy to Support Operation Gratitude

Our class collected candy in support of Operation Gratitude to send to the troops. We also sent cards the students created. We appreciate everything the troops do to protect our country!

Filming Reading Movie at Mill Valley

The students recently filmed their movie, Electried at Mill Valley High School on their green screen. We read Electrified in class. Then the students created scenes, wrote their lines and acted it out. Thank you Mrs. Schwartz and your broadcasting students for all of your help!

Curriculum Update November 11-15

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. We definitely had some nice weather!

Please remember we will be going back to Mill Valley on Friday to film two of our scenes again. We should only be gone from 12:55-1:30.

Here is the curriculum for the week.

ELA/Science: We will continue our force and interactions unit. The overall guiding question will be, "How do you know forces are acting on an object?" We will be conducting investigations to better understand how unbalanced and balanced forces impact motion. We will continue identifying the main idea of a text by recounting the details and explaining how they support the main idea. We will be continue using active reading behaviors to accomplish this.

Spelling/Vocabulary: The tests will be on Friday. The words are:

motion: a change in place or position
friction: a force caused by two objects rubbing against each other
distance: a measure of how far and object moves
measure: to find out how much there is of something
speed: a measure of how fast and object is moving

Math: We will continue working on multiplication facts this week and learning how to multiply with combinations, multiplying 3 factors and using problem-solving for multi-step problems. We will be completing our multiplication website. The students are also creating their own video games to work on problem-solving and critical thinking, while also incorporating summarizing and citing evidence.

Writing: Our New Zealand friends are completing our bouncing stories with a creative ending. It has been so much fun seeing the children work together across continents. We will being our multiplication opinion piece this week and learn how to address post cards. The students will also write their initial letters to Taiwan and write our Georgia and Illinois pen pals back.

Oliver was Team Leggett MVP for the week of November 4-8. Oliver loves airplanes and has a goal of being an aerospace engineer. Way to go Oliver!

Shawnee Movies

Our Shawnee movies are finally complete! This was their first time using Windows Movie Maker. The students did a wonderful job putting them together! While interviewing individuals on our community walk, we stopped at McDonald's for a snack.

Thank you to Shawnee City Manager, Carol Gonzales, for taking the time to come and present to the third graders about Shawnee in the past compared to Shawnee today. The third graders have been studying about the history of Shawnee and how the past impacts present day Shawnee. It was very informative and wonderful to hear from an expert.

Multiplication Array Debate Winners

Congratulations to Alex, Jack G. and Sam for winning the multiplication array debate. They did a wonderful job of using evidence and reasoning to support their position. A special thank you to

A special thank you to each of you for sending in all the items for our fall party and for organizing it. The kids had a wonderful time!

PTO Bingo night has been postponed. Please see the message below.

The Prairie Ridge PTO feels it is important to support all schools in our area and we know our families feel the same. We are postponing PTO Family Bingo Night, originally scheduled for this Friday, so it does not conflict with community members' ability to attend the MVHS Jaguar football team’s Regional Play-off game that same night. We encourage our entire PRE community to support the MVHS Jaguars. More details regarding the new date for Bingo Night will be announced soon. GO JAGUARS!!!

Thanksgiving lunch will be on Wednesday, November 20. Please RSVP by Monday, November 18 if you would like to eat lunch. You may call 913-667-1800.

Math: We will be working on our multiplication facts and the distributive property this week. We will focus on the factors 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8. We will also be doing a multiplication math project where the students will be the teacher of multiplication for 2nd graders.

Writing: We are in the process of writing our bouncing stories with a third grade class in New Zealand. The students wrote two pages, then New Zealand wrote two, now we are writing two more. We will also be writing multiplication opinion piece and writing our pen pals in Taiwan, California and Michigan.
