STEM - Straw Towers
We incorporated STEM into our classroom by seeing what group could use 50 straws to construct the largest tower, using only masking tape. The tower had to be able to hold a tennis ball. It was really interesting seeing the kid's strategies, problem-solving methods and how they collaborated.
Shared Inquiry Discussion
We had a shared inquiry discussion. The students really enjoyed leading the discussion, while the outside circle watched their partner. They focused on whether their partner was speaking in the discussion, if they referred to the text, asked a question, responded to speakers, interrupted speakers or engaged in side conversation. This was a great way for the students to hold each other accountable. They really did a wonderful job.
