I hope that everyone had a great weekend. It looks like the weather will b much better this week for our solar cookers. We will go on our community walk on Thursday at 1:15 pm.
enVision Math
We will add with an expanded algorithm, look at models for adding 3-digit numbers, add 3-digit numbers, add 3 or more numbers, and draw a picture for problem solving.
Rigby Reading
We will begin Theme 3 in Rigby this week. We will review asking questions and work on inferring. The students will be expected to read between the lines of what the author is implying in his or her writing.
Grammar- The focus will be on subjects and predicates.
Spelling
The Rigby words this week are ball, day, up, what, alone, quote, polite, surprise, entire, and plague.
The focus of the extension list is poly-many.
polychromatic, polyclinical, polydactyle, polyglot, polygon, polygraph, polyhedron, polymorphous, polysyllabic, and polytheism.
Science
Last week, the students had to create their own science experiement with different solar cookers and lamps to simulate the sun. They were expected to use all steps of the scientific process in their experiement and raise their own questions that they wanted to discover. They were able to use foil, cheese, chocolate, candles, and black containers. They did a wonderful job of rising to the expectation of using their own inquiry to guide them through the lesson.
This week, we will have our solar cookout and begin looking at the moon and stars.
Social Studies
We will culminate our communities unit with a community walk. The students will walk throughout the community, while observing things that stand out to them. They will have to draw something from their community and discuss the importance of it. We will also go to McDonald's where the students can practice using real-world skills with money. In addition, we will begin our first month of our Pay it Forward initiative of the year.
Writing
We will publish our vacation papers this week and begin a mini-lesson on descriptive writing.
We will also begin using our e-pals e-mail addresses to write our e-pals in Germany back. The students received letters from Germany, Kentucky, and Georgia last week. They also wrote to their pen pals in Pennsylvania.

Earth Absorption & Solar Heaters
Here is a new video of our class and Miss Keith's working on earth absorption materials and solar heaters.
Charring Paper with Solar Energy
In Science, we learned how to char paper. The students used their converging lens to capture the focal point of the sunlight. They were able to see how the dark color absorbed the energy. When the solar heat was concentrated at a small point, they were able to char the paper.
Leggettville Community
Last week, the kiddos used milk cartons to create their own rural, suburban or urban community. We went over the definition for each one, then they were in charge of using their creativity to create each community and community story. They came up with the name "Leggettville" for their community.

It had a bank, a school with a room large enough to hold the 20 students in K-8, a lot of land with few houses and very little people. The farm grew many kinds of fruit. The windmill provided wind power for the barn. There were a lot of animals and very few visitors.

Over time, Leggettville changed. The farms became replaced with signs that said, "We have a good home for you. This place will blow your mind!" Leggettville had swimming pools, a school and a tennis court. The rooms in the houses were amazing. The population increased so much that neighborhoods were established and friendships were formed. It had everything that you possibly needed. There was even an airport.
Now, Leggettville has more streets and tons of apartments. It has an airport, a lot of gas stations, a really safe bank, and of course Adam's Fun Ride!!! There are a lot of birds. The houses are so big that they need cleaning services. Leggettville always has planes taking off every hour. It is known for Leggett Enterprises. It is very tall! There are a lot of cars and taxis that make traffic crazy each day. All you hear is, "Beep, beep, beep, GET OUT OF MY WAY!!! You should come visit Leggettville!!!
Curriculum September 12-16
Welcome back to a full a week of school! The kiddos completed MAP testing last week. They did a great job with their first computerized test of the school year. Thank you to everyone that volunteered to send in things for our solar cookout on Friday. We have our fingers crossed that it will be a warm and sunny day!
enVision Math
We will estimate differences, make sense of addition and subtraction equations, use problem solving to evaluate reasonableness and take the Topic 2 test.
Rigby Reading
We will continue theme two in Rigby this week. The focus will be on asking questions to promote thinking before, during and after reading.
Please look for a leveled reading passage and leveled graphic organizer to work on this strategy. Reading logs will continue this week. Please make sure that you sign off on the log each week and have your child total the minutes.
Grammar- The focus will be on verbs
Spelling
The Rigby words this week are come, dog, down, me, credit, grand, quest, drizzle, problem and sprinkle.
The focus of the extension list is mono-one.

We will continue our solar energy unit. Last week, the students learned about converging lens, the focal point of a parabolic reflector and how to char paper. This week, the students will create sun traps, test different parabolic mirrors and create their own solar cookers.
Social Studies
We will continue our communities unit. The students will break into groups to form their own classroom community. They will be broken into government, economics, communication, recreation and services.
Writing
We will continue to work on revising and editing our Narrative paper on, "My most Memorable Vacation".
The students have a editing sheet that they have to complete before they take their paper to the publishing stage.
We will also correspond with some of our e-pals and pen pals. The students are learning more about rural communities with a rural classroom in Kentucky, urban with a classroom in California and Pennsylvania. We are also working with a suburban classroom in Georgia. This week the students will also be paired with classroom in Germany.

September 7-9

We will continue our unit on addition and subtraction number sense. The focus this week will be on using mental math to subtract, rounding and estimating sums.

Ben Wieland Team Leggett MVP By: Sabrina Ishanyan
Ben is a very funny boy and is a really smart one. Ben has a mind that is really big. He is kind and helpful. He is very enthusiastic about school. Ben also teaches us really cool stuff and absolutely LOVES the Philadelphia Phillies. Ben is FANTASTIC!!!
