Mayor Meyers and City Councilman Neighbor Visit
Shawnee Mayor, Jeff Meyers and City Councilman Jim Neighbor took the time to come speak with the third grade about local government. They explained and answered questions about their roles and responsibilities. This was great for the students since they recently completed their government unit.
Curriculum Update April 7-11

Reading Assessment April 7th & 8th 9:00-11:00
Math Assessment April 16th & 17th 9:00-11:00
MAP Assessment April 28-30 9:00-10:30

There is no school for students on Friday, April 25.
ELA/Science
We are continuing our life cycles unit. The students have been observing their lady bugs, preying mantis and beetles and discussing the stages they are in. Students will continue to work on their web quest where they are creating their own species and life cycle for it.
The students will be writing an informative paper through a press release about the life cycle of a species they create and will also be writing from the perspective of a species in different traits.
Students will also continue to work in their novel books where they are discussing character motives and predicting what they think will happen in the future. They are also answering comprehension questions. When finished, students will work on their Animoto videos and 30 second commercials evaluating the book.
Math
Students will continue to work on area this week. They are comparing the area to the perimeter. The students have been working in differentiated groups, playing games and working on projects at their level.
Spelling/Vocabulary
Both tests will be on April 18th.
biodiversity: the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem
system: a set of parts that interact with one another
behavior: the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others
ecosystem: all the living and non-living things in a place
environment: all things that make up an area like land, water and air
fossil: the remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in petrified form or as a mold or cast in a rock

survive: continue to live or exist in spite of danger or hardship
habitat: a living things home
shelter: one of the basic things provided by a habitat that helps protect an organism and offers it a safe place to rest
migrate: to move to another place to find better climate, food or a mate
competition: struggle that happens when two or more living things needs the same resource
instinct: a behavioral adaptation in which an animal is born with natural behaviors they need to survive
mimicry: the action or art of imitating someone or something (animals do this to protect themselves)
group: a number of people or things that are located close together or are considered classes together

Butterfly Exercise Videos
We have been studying about life cycles in class. The students watched some short videos on butterflies and studied their life cycle. Afterwards, they worked in groups to create choreograph a 1 minute exercise video using butterfly movements. Finally, they chose a background song and recorded their video. Enjoy!

City Councilman Mickey Sandifer Visit
While studying government, Shawnee City Councilman, Mickey Sandifer, visited with the class about his role and responsibilities in local government.

Life Cycles & Habitats with Mrs. Arbaugh's Kindergarten Class
We have been learning about life cycles. The third graders invited Mrs. Arbaugh's Kindergarten class in to see our class animals and describe their habitats, what they eat and how to take care of them. They also explained the life cycles of our lady bugs, preying mantis and beetles.
Creating Objects for Perimeter
The students have been working on perimeter. They created their own shapes and then traded with a partner for them to find the perimeter. Afterwards, they discussed their perimeters and why the created the shape the way they did.
