One of the best opportunities I have had is teaching in both a Title I school in an urban environment, along with an affluent school in a suburban environment. One of the common things is kids are kids. All kids wanted to be treated fairly, have high expectations for them and wanted to feel loved. All kids want someone to truly care they are present at school and care about their well-being. Here is a post I wrote about it:

Holiday Collaboration with Andriotti School in Greece
Miss Murray, one of the second grade teachers at Rosehill partnered with Andriotti School in Greece. The students created Christmas cards and wrote letters. Then, the two schools exchanged them. It was culminated with a Skype where students got to meet who they received their Christmas card from. They also compared and contrasted how they celebrated Christmas and the New Year.
6th Grade Genius Hour Night
We had our 6th grade genius hour night on December 3. We invited parents, school board members, district administrators and members of the community. This was a great time for the students to showcase their talents for an authentic audience. We had a great turnout. One of the best things was seeing some once reluctant students become very confident public speakers. This is an image of all the students' passions, along with quotes, feedback of what they learned and what their next steps would be with their project.

Look out your Window Community Skype with Cheery Centre in Nairobi, Kenya
Our 2nd grade is working on a project called, "Look out your Window". Students looked out their window and drew what they saw. From there, teachers talked to them about a suburban community. Students learned what it was like and how it compares and differs from an urban and rural community. Now, students are speaking with classrooms around the world to see what their community is like. The first group of students they talked with was a 2nd grade class in Nairobi, Kenya at the Cheery Centre. The students learned so much from the experience.
