Animoto Connection Videos

In reading, we have been working on making connections.  The students were faced with the task of creating their own music video where they had to incorporate connections into their videos.  Please see the links below to see he wonderful creations that your child came up with to demonstrate that they understand how to make a connection.

Sun Prints

On Friday, the kids created their own sun prints with their initials.  Their prints were out in the sun all day.  They were able to see how the letters were the shade, while the sun faded the rest of the construction paper.


Apple Jacks & Marshmallow Math




In math, we have been working on place value.  We used marshmallows and toothpicks as a base.  The Apple Jacks represented the value of each number.  After a lot of practice, the kids finally got to eat.  I think that was their favorite part!

Lake is a great kid with a great personality.  He cares for others and helps people.  He also gives other people Sprite.  His favorite food is pizza.  He has a dog and his favorite sport is football.  Lake is an awesome kid!

enVision Math
We be taking the practice test together in class for Topic 1.  This same test is also online.  Please notify me if you didn't receive the parent letter for enVision with your child's user name and password.  Each lesson that your child views in class is also online.  We will take the computerized Topic 1 test on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, we will begin Topic 2.  The overview is Number Sense: Addition and Subtraction.
Next week, we will cover Addition Meaning and Properties, Subtraction Meanings and Using Mental Mat to Add.


Rigby Reading
We will continue focusing on Making Connections. After reading, you can ask your child how they are able to relate to the text, relate it to another text, or relate it to the world.
*We will begin reading logs this week. They are due the Tuesday of the following week.
*A leveled passsage and leveled graphic organizer will come home this week for homework.
*Students will begin working on open-ended reading questions.
*Grammar-We will continue to focus on identifying nouns  with an emphasis this week on proper and common nouns.

Spelling

We will continue our solar energy unit.  The students will test earth materials and create solar heat collectors.
Social Studies
We will continue our communities unit.  This week, the students learned about their home and their city, laws and the mayor.  Next week, we will be covering the history of Shawnee, recreation and city services in Shawnee. 
Writing
We will begin a draft on the topic, "My favorite vacation ever."  The main focus will be voice, strong beginnings and strong conclusions.

Solar Energy

In the past two weeks, the kids have been learning about solar energy.  They have created solar collectors, tracked their shadows, created sun dials, and tested how effective different sunscreens are on UV beads.  Here is a video of our class and Miss Keith's class that highlights some things that took place.

Curriculum August 22-26

It is exciting that we will be beginning our second week of school. We began enVision and Rigby last week. Here is what we will be doing this week.  Parent Information Night is on Thursday at 6:00 pm.

enVision Math
Understanding Number Lines, Counting on the Number Line, Comparing Numbers, Ordering Numbers, Problem Solving-Make and Organized List
*Students can choose practice or enrichment or both. A problem solving sheet and logic will come home on Tuesday and Thursday for those that want extra practice.  On Wednesday, the Common Core Review will be required.

Rigby Reading

Spelling
Each week, there will be a Rigby list and an extension list that will focus on a specific prefix, suffix, or Greek root.  The extension list will be a spelling test and a vocabulary test. Each week, the students will receive both lists in their Monday folder. They can choose which list they want to practice.

Extension: Focus on Pre (before, in advance): preapprove, precaution, precede, predict, prefix, prejudge, prepay, pretest, prevent, preview

Science
Last week, we began a unit on Solar Energy.  We talked about how it was renewable.  The students learned about the sun and then created a sun art project.  Students also used  Photovoltaics (PV) to see how they generate electrical pressure.  On Friday, students created sun dials and tracked their shadows to understand how the earth rotates, how people used the sun to tell time, and how the sun effects shadows.  This week, the students will be learning how to create solar collectors, learning about sun vs. shade, creating sun signs, and learning which earth materials absorbs the most solar energy.

Social Studies
We will be beginning a unit on communities.  The children will learn about what makes up a community.  There will be  focus on community and neighborhoods.  The students will focus on the following questions:
1)What make a community a community?
2)Why do I need a community?
3)Why does a community need me?
4)What makes a successful community?

Writing
We will focus on Pre-writing strategies.

Skittle Math

The kids used Skittles in math today. We estimated, sorted, used addition, subtraction, and division. Students also worked on greater than and less than.  Here is a video of our Skittle Math.

Team Leggett All-Star Club

Team Leggett All-Star Challenge
