Real-World Perimeter in Math

We are working on perimeter in math. Students have been learning how to calculate perimeter and what measuring tools are best used to calculate perimeter. We measured the tennis courts and had a discussion about why it had the certain perimeter it did. Then, we had been talking about miles. We went to the track so the students could understand how one lap was 400 meters, but how 4 laps was a mile. To cap it off, we split the class up and a 4 x 1 relay race. It was a lot of fun!

Cancer Mate - Seeking a Solution to a Problem

A group of students has been working on a science project, where they are seeking a solution for cancer patients. This project was inspired after the cancer diagnosis of one of the members of the group's mothers. The group was able to interview her mom's doctor at MD Anderson Cancer Center a few times to help with advice and information for the project. The students created a Cancer Mate to make life easier for both the patients and their families who are caregivers for them. Here is the completed website the students worked on. I am really proud of these students for envisioning a solution to the horrendous problem.

Fractions Extension Project

Emma recently presented her extension math project for fractions. She researched a recipe that stood out to her, then doubled and tripled the fractions to show how much was needed at various serving sizes. She used Prezi to share her findings to the class.

Geometric Cities

Students have been working on learning about geometry. They learned the shapes, lines, angles and about different types of triangles. Students worked together to create their own geometric cities, then they took images of their city, uploaded them and created their geometric city movies on Animoto

School of Economics Field Trip

We recently went to the School of Economics in Blue Springs, MO. This was a wonderful way for the students to learn economics through a real-world application.
